THE BEST FLOORING FOR THE OKANAGAN CLIMATE (DRY SUMMERS, COLD WINTERS)
The Okanagan has one of BC's driest climates — and that matters more for flooring than most people realize.
WHY THE OKANAGAN CLIMATE MATTERS
Average summer relative humidity in Kelowna sits around 30–40%. Winter humidity inside heated homes can drop below 25%. Solid hardwood needs 35–55% RH to stay stable. That mismatch is why we see gapping and cupping in solid hardwood floors installed without acclimation.
HARDWOOD: ENGINEERED BEATS SOLID HERE
Engineered hardwood's plywood core is dimensionally stable across humidity swings. Solid hardwood is more prone to gapping in winter and slight cupping in summer. We almost always recommend engineered over solid in Okanagan homes.
LVP: CLIMATE-PROOF
Luxury vinyl plank is unaffected by humidity. It's the safest choice for spaces with big humidity swings — basements, four-season rooms, lakeside cabins.
TILE: ALWAYS A GOOD BET
Porcelain tile doesn't care about humidity at all. Pair it with in-floor heating to solve the cold-tile-in-winter problem.
LAMINATE: ACCLIMATE BEFORE INSTALL
Laminate is also affected by humidity. The fix is simple — leave the boxes in the room for 48–72 hours before installation so the planks acclimate. Skip this and you'll get expansion problems later.
EPOXY: PERFECT FOR GARAGES
Garages and basements in Kelowna swing through huge temperature ranges. Epoxy doesn't care. It's why epoxy is so popular here.
