HOW TO CHOOSE A FLOORING INSTALLER IN KELOWNA (WITHOUT GETTING BURNED)

There are 90+ flooring installers in Kelowna. Some of them are excellent. Some of them are awful. Here's how to tell the difference before you sign anything.

1. THEY SHOW UP TO QUOTE IN PERSON

A real flooring installer comes to your house, measures the rooms, looks at your subfloor, asks about moisture and traffic, and then writes a quote. If someone gives you a price over the phone or by text without seeing the space, walk away.

2. THEY CARRY REAL INSURANCE

Liability insurance and WorkSafeBC coverage are non-negotiable for any contractor in BC. Ask to see proof. Real installers have it ready; sketchy ones change the subject.

3. THEY GIVE YOU A FIXED-PRICE WRITTEN QUOTE

"It'll be around $X" is not a quote. A real quote is on letterhead, lists every line item (demo, prep, material, install, trim), specifies the product brand and SKU, and has a fixed price. T&M ("time and materials") quotes are how you get surprise-billed.

4. THEY DON'T PRESSURE YOU

Anyone giving you a "today only" discount is selling you, not installing for you. Real flooring installers are busy and don't need to pressure-close.

5. THEY HAVE LOCAL REFERENCES YOU CAN ACTUALLY CALL

Not Yelp reviews — actual phone numbers of past clients in your area. Call two of them. Ask about the install process, timeline accuracy, and how the floor has held up.

6. THEY SPECIALIZE IN WHAT YOU'RE BUYING

Hardwood, tile, and epoxy are different skills. A great laminate installer is not necessarily a great tile setter. Make sure the installer has specific experience with your material.

7. RED FLAGS

Cash-only deals, no written contract, asking for full payment up front, "we can start tomorrow if you decide right now," no business address, and quotes that come in dramatically below everyone else's. If three competitors quote $7,000 and one quotes $3,500, the cheap one is cutting something critical.
