SCANDINAVIAN-STYLE FLOORING FOR MODERN KELOWNA HOMES
The Scandi look isn't just about IKEA furniture. It starts with the floor. Here's the formula that actually works in Kelowna homes.
THE FOUNDATION: LIGHT, WIDE-PLANK OAK
Scandinavian flooring is almost always light oak — natural, white-washed, or very lightly stained. Wide planks (7"+ and ideally 9"–10"). Engineered for stability in our dry climate.
THE FINISH: MATTE, ALWAYS
No gloss. Hardwax oil or matte waterborne polyurethane. The wood should look like wood, not like plastic. This is the #1 mistake homeowners make trying to fake the Scandi look.
VISIBLE GRAIN, MINERAL STREAKS, KNOTS
Hide-grade or rustic-grade oak — boards with character, knots, mineral streaks, and visible grain. The "perfect, clear, knot-free" hardwood is the opposite of the Scandi aesthetic.
CONTINUOUS FLOORS, NO TRANSITIONS
Run the same hardwood through every connected room. Avoid tile-to-wood transitions in main living spaces. Visual continuity is core to the look.
PAIR WITH
White or warm-white walls. Matte black or brushed brass hardware. Linen and wool textiles. Plants. Built-in storage so the floor stays visible.
COST IN KELOWNA
Wide-plank, light, natural-finish engineered oak runs $14–$22/sq ft installed in Kelowna. The premium over standard hardwood is worth it because the look depends on the wide planks and the natural finish — you can't fake either with cheap product.
BRANDS WE RECOMMEND
Kährs (Swedish, the originals), DuChâteau's natural collections, and Mirage Lock for budget-friendly Canadian-made wide plank.
